Carrollton, Texas is a city split between three different counties: Denton County, Dallas County and Collin County. The area now occupied by Carrollton was first settled back in 1842 by Mr. Jared Ford, along with William and Mary Larner. The settlers that made up this predominantly English colony were largely from Carrollton, Illinois – hence the name Carrollton. Many of the area’s early settlers were big landowners, and agriculture played an important early role in Carrollton’s development however this all changed after the completion of the Dallas-Wichita Railroad through Trinity Mills in 1878.
With the new railroad, industrialization moved into Carrollton – further strengthened when the railroad was extended to nearby Denton in 1880. Just 5 years later, Carrollton was booming with flour mills, cotton gins, 2 churches, a school and a population of 150. When the St. Louis Southwestern Railway made its way across the Katy River in 1888, Carrollton became a shipping center for livestock, cotton, cottonseed and grain. In 1912, the gravel industry came to town and one year later – Carrollton was incorporated as a city.
