Cedar Hill, Texas is a city located in parts of both Dallas and Ellis Counties. Founded in the 1850s, a branch of the Chisholm Trail, used for transporting livestock out of Texas, used to pass through the area now occupied by Cedar Hill. In 1856, the Cedar Hill area was left devastated by a twister, which killed nine residents and decimated nearly all of the town’s buildings.
Cedar Hill has switched between two alternate spellings of its name over the years, the most common being Cedar Hill, spelled as two words. In 1897 the name was officially changed to “Cedarhill,” however by 1900 the residents had reverted back to the original spelling. While Cedar Hill’s population was growing steadily towards the end of the 19th century, the city saw a dramatic increase in the 1980s, especially noticeable after 1989 with the opening of nearby Joe Pool Lake, which includes several parks, paved boat ramps, public swimming areas and a public marina.
