Fort Worth, Texas has the distinguished honor of being the sixteenth biggest (in terms of population size) city in the U.S. and the fifth largest in Texas. Named after U.S. Army General William Jenkins Worth, the area originally served as an outpost and effective barrier against Native American attacks, which were rampant for much of the 19th century. Worth, a revered Mexican-American War veteran proposed the construction of ten forts to mark where the west Texas frontier started. Although the General was struck down by Cholera in 1849, one of these forts was named in honor, first as “Camp Worth,” then later as Fort Worth, when the U.S. War Department officially changed the name. After Fort Worth was abandoned by the U.S. Army in 1853, in favor of a newly constructed fort to the west, pioneer settlers of the area moved in and claimed it, making it into a town of sorts. Fort Worth was incorporated as a city in 1873.
