Garland, Texas is a large city located northeast of Dallas and is considered a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. While immigrants started settling in the area around 1850, a community wasn’t formed until 1874 – two communities to be precise – Embree and Duck Creek. As the area started to experience significant growth following the installation of the nearby Santa Fe Railroad depot, the two communities fell into a dispute surrounding the location of the post office. To quash this dispute, a judge ordered that the post office be placed in between the two towns, and so it was in 1887. The new spot was given the name Garland, after U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland. Eventually, the communities of Embree and Duck Creek were merged and all three areas became the city of Garland, Texas. Garland was incorporated in 1891.
