Mesquite, Texas is a city found within the Dallas/Fort Worth area inside Dallas and Kaufman counties. Founded on Mach 14, 1878, Mesquite was built right along the Texas & Pacific Railroad line that stretched from Dallas all the way to Shreveport, Louisiana. Mesquite was incorporated as a city in 1887. Serving as a railroad stop for many years, Mesquite flourished throughout the latter part of the 19th century, thanks in large part to its close proximity with the railroad line, which was used to ship raw goods. The economy of the city and its surrounding area was predominantly agricultural, with farmers growing cotton, hay, corn and sugar.
The city remained dependent on agriculture until after World War II when the city’s population started to explode, thanks to the suburban boom that was taking place all over the country. The area continued to develop as a suburban mecca through the 1950s and 1960s, complete with a variety of destinations and attractions designed to spur the local economy. In 1958, the Mesquite ProRodeo opened, followed in 1959 by the Big Town Mall. In the early 1970s, the LBJ Freeway opened, connecting Mesquite to its neighbors and further encouraging population growth in the region. According to the 2010 census, Mesquite’s population was reported at just under 140,000 residents, making it the 18th largest city, in terms of population, in Texas.
