Murphy, Texas is a city located in Collin County, and is considered a suburb of Dallas. It is situated in between Plano and Wylie within the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Settled in 1846, the original townsite of Murphy was named Old Decator, after the land owner, C.A. McMillen’s, home town. It wasn’t until the Southwest Railway reached the area in 1888 that residents decided to rename the town Murphy, in honor of Mr. William Murphy, who donated his land to the railroad, allowing for railroad tracks and eventually the construction of a depot.
While population growth in the Murphy area was stagnant through much of the 1960s it soon turned into a flourishing commuter community, thanks in part to its proximity to Plano and Richardson, both of which had thriving economies. In 2011, the city of Murphy was ranked #27 on “Money Magazine’s” list of the best small towns in America.
