North Richland Hills, Texas is a city found in Tarrant County, and is a suburb of Fort Worth. While it wasn’t incorporated as a city until 1953, North Richland Hills began as a community of 600 families who moved there in 1848, at the behest of W.S. Peters, who agreed to bring in families of farmers over the course of three years as part of a land grant. Tarrant County was officially established in the following year with Birdville, the town adjacent to where North Richland Hills now sits, listed as the first county seat.
An early farming and ranching community, the area surrounding modern day North Richland Hills remained predominantly agricultural for years. In 1952, farmer and landowner Clarence Jones decided to develop a portion of his dairy farm land into a residential area. The following year, the North Richland Hills Civic League attempted to annex this residential area into Richland Hills but opted instead to form their own city after their proposed annexation was nixed. After North Richland Hills was officially incorporated with a population of 500, the city started annexing surrounding communities, thereby drastically increasing the number of residents. As of the official 2000 census, North Richland Hills is home to more than 55,000 people.
