Rowlett is a city found inside two Texas counties; Dallas and Rockwall, and is considered a suburb of Dallas. Modern day Rowlett is an upscale “bedroom community” in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and sits right on picturesque Lake Ray Hubbard. The city of Rowlett takes its name from Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the Trinity River which flows right into Lake Ray Hubbard. The creek got its name from Daniel Rowlett, a property owner who’s land the creek ran through the middle of. Part of the Smoot-Rowlett political family, Daniel Rowlett had no public affiliation with his namesake town.
Originally called “Morris” in 1880 after the local Postmaster, Austin Morris, the town was later renamed to Rowlett. In its early days, the town was something of a railroad town with the Dallas and Greenville Railroad passing right through Rowlett, and connecting Dallas Proper with Greenville, Texas. The town was officially incorporated in 1952.
