The rural town of Sunnyvale, Texas is the easternmost city within Dallas County and is located along picturesque Lake Ray Hubbard. The area occupied by modern day Sunnyvale was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes before the arrival of Europeans in the 17th and 18th centuries. Eventually, the area surrounding Sunnyvale would come under the control of the Spanish. While the area remained relatively underdeveloped for years, settlers migrating to Texas eventually settled there. Mexico took control of the area in 1821 after receiving its independence from Spain. Following the Texas Revolution, the area went to the Republic of Texas, which in turn launched the area into a period of development.
Originally called Long Creek, more settlers arrived after Texas was made a state in the year 1845. The area population swelled throughout the 1860s, leading to the creation of a slew of new towns including the three towns that would eventually merge to become present day Sunnyvale; New Hope, Tripp, and Hatterville. For a time, New Hope was the most prosperous of the three towns, until a large storm blew through, decimating everything in 1921. The economy and population remained stagnant through the 1940s and into the 1950s, until they eventually merged in 1953. The town was named Sunnyvale, after a local school held a contest to pick a new name for the city.
